EMERGENCY Heating Replacement

If my heating equipment or water heater breaks down during the heating season, can I replace the equipment before an energy evaluation?

In some cases, furnaces, boilers or domestic hot water equipment cannot be repaired or are deemed unsafe (red-tagged), and so must be replaced for health and safety reasons as soon as possible. Between October 15, 2011, and March 30, 2012, homeowners can purchase and install eligible equipment before obtaining a pre-retrofit evaluation only if they meet the criteria and they carefully follow the guidelines.

Multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs) are eligible and require an evaluation by a MURB-certified advisor?

The ecoENERGY program considers side-by-side semi-detached units with their own entrances, attics and basements as single-family homes, and not as MURBs.

Most low-rise multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs) and mixed-use buildings are eligible for the grant if there are three stories or less, the footprint is less than 600 square meters, there are a maximum of 20 units, at least 50% of the floor space, including the basement, is used for residential purposes, and there is no specialized commercial equipment. Since the energy advisor needs to evaluate the structure from the basement to the attic, all units must be accessible in the pre-retrofit assessment by an energy advisor who has been certified to evaluate MURBs. Depending on the number of outside doors required to access all the building, the property may not be eligible. Read More ...

Registration closed and new deadline for post-retrofit evaluations

The renewed ecoENERGY Retrofit - Homes program has reached its goal of 250,000 registered homeowners and is now closed to new registrations. By ending registration at this time, the program is confident that all currently registered homeowners will have the opportunity to apply for and receive a grant for their eligible retrofit upgrades.

To help ensure that program participants have the opportunity to complete their required post-retrofit evaluation and apply for a grant, the deadline to obtain the post-retrofit evaluation is now June 30, 2012.  All upgrades must still be completed by March 31, 2012 to be eligible. Only upgrades purchased and installed between the program eligibility dates of June 6, 2011 to March 31, 2012, will be considered for a grant and must be validated with receipts dated between those dates. As per current program requirements, failure to substantiate the dates of the retrofits will result in grant ineligibility.
